East Springs Animal Hospital
Breeding Program
Responsible breeding takes a lot of work and East Springs Animal Hospital is here to help.
Proper breeding programs take a lot of time and planning. The planning process involves a screening test to ensure the new puppies have the best chance to live long and healthy lives. At East Springs Animal Hospital Dr. Morgan and Ivana Bailey, CVT, are Penn Hip certified for early hip dysplasia screening. We also work with Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) to screen for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, cardiac function, and thyroid function.
Pre-breeding examinations are the next step to ensure your female dog is healthy and that all of the options have been explained. Progesterone tests are a blood sample that is taken every 2-7 days during a female dogs' cycle. This will tell us when to perform the insemination and also helps to predict the whelping date.
Transcervical insemination or TCT is the most dependable minimally invasive way to artificially inseminate the female. A fibro-optic camera is used to visualize the cervix and then the cervix is catheterized for the insemination. Surgical inseminations are available too, but these are typically reserved for breeding with frozen semen. The least expensive artificial insemination is the high vaginal insemination. This procedure works very well when both dogs are highly fertile.
In as little as 3 weeks after breeding an ultrasound can be preformed to evaluate our success. When puppies are confirmed an x-ray at 50 days will help us to accurately count puppies. If a C-section is scheduled it will be 60 days from the Al.
